Bear Necessities is not a charity or a non-profit organization with corporate sponsors, but simply a community of people behaving like a real community. Some have much. Some have much less. Bear Necessities closes the gap between the two by acting as a liaison and providing donated food to students over the weekends that may not have much at home. Everything received by students in this community is donated by other people in the community. Nothing comes from the government or tax dollars or corporate anyone. Every donation is received because someone felt called by God to share what they have been given with someone else that lives in this community. The donor may know the recipient but they may not. The donor may live in this geographical area but they may not. Our connection is that God desires to provide for all by allowing His followers to be His hands and feet. By the provision of Christ Jesus, Bear Necessities is currently serving John Weldon Elementary.
Each week school counselors inconspicuously place shopping bags of donated food in the backpacks of students whose parents have signed up for Bear Necessities. Anyone that is struggling financially and needs assistance to ensure that their child(ren) has enough to eat over the weekend can apply. Only school counselors know who is in the program. Complete anonymity is maintained for all recipients. Donations can be anonymous or not but all donations are currently being dropped off at 118 Wimbledon Ct., O'Fallon, MO 63368.

To allow everyone in the community an opportunity to play an active role in service, a packing schedule is being created for families to sign up to pack bags on Thursdays, unless it is a short week and then packing will take place the day before the last day of the week. Anyone that comes to pack bags will need to sit through a five minute orientation and sign a confidentiality promise stating that if they happen notice a student with a bag from Bear Necessities they will not acknowledge it to that student or any other person. There will also be an explanation of why we have Bear Necessities and we will pray for everyone involved in our community.
