Earlier this week was World Hunger Day. I'd never even heard of it but ironically, spent the evening with
Calvary Church's middle schoolers packing boxes at
St. Louis Food Bank. We had a terrific time and they worked so hard. I'm not sure how many pallets of food they packed but each box will feed a senior citizen in the St. Louis area for a time. As I looked around and saw the kids smiling and having fun serving, my heart was joyful.
When we left we went to Chick-fil-a to eat and in an attempt to save my brain from the speed of which middle school girls all speak at the same time and checked Facebook. That's when I learned that it was World Hunger Day. You see, we aren't the only ones that are doing this. A dear friend from college named Emily began working with a teacher friend serving the Crystal City schools, where her children attend, just a few months after we began here at John Weldon. She was fortunate enough to see a cute little picture of a t-shirt about ending world hunger and learned about World Hunger Day. Since she did such a great job of saying it, I wanted to share it with you:
"Today, October 16, is World Food Day. World Food Day was founded in 1979 and is recognized in over 150 countries worldwide to bring attention to the issues if poverty and hunger. For a child who doesn't have enough to eat, the problems go far beyond a rumbling belly. They can't focus in class because all they think about is food. They can't concentrate on their homework. If they get sick, it takes them longer to get healthy. Thanks to your support, we can help to spare the little ones in our community from going hungry. Please take a moment today to pray for the children we serve, as well as the children around the globe who are struggling to get enough to eat. And thank you for your continued support-you are making a difference for the little ones in our school!"
Why recreate the wheel when someone has said it perfectly?! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!
God is using this ministry and this community to change lives and the word is getting out. Just yesterday I got an email from a donor friend saying that she'd ran into someone at the grocery store when she was shopping for Bear Necessities, told her friend about it and her friend immediately went to buy stuff for her to bring too! Keeping with quoting fabulous people, she said "The Holy Spirit was at work!"
This week we do need a few things for our bags. Here's our list of what you can do to be a part of that work that God is doing:
44 oatmeal envelopes
20 peanut butter
2 almond butter
10 green beans
Another thing you can do is just tell people about what we're doing. Other schools need their communities to rise up in Jesus name to feed the hungry there but most people don't even realize that there are hungry kids at their schools. Will you tell them?
